Launched in August 2021 it\u2019s one of the world\u2019s most efficient and sustainable ships \u2013 already compliant with the IMO\u2019s 2050 greenhouse gas reduction target and the EU\u2019s upcoming Fit for 55 package.<\/p>\n<p>So, how is it possible for Wasaline to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions on an already efficient vessel?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fuel optimisation is the fastest route to more sustainable and economical vessel operations&#8221;, says<strong> Jonas Teir<\/strong> from Wasaline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our ambitious environmental targets and the current spike in fuel prices make fuel efficiency a critical part of daily operations for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are four ways Wasaline is improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-ld8rm0o0-8240ff45705efd873778fe19eb212980\">\n#top .av-special-heading.av-ld8rm0o0-8240ff45705efd873778fe19eb212980{\npadding-bottom:10px;\n}\nbody .av-special-heading.av-ld8rm0o0-8240ff45705efd873778fe19eb212980 .av-special-heading-tag .heading-char{\nfont-size:25px;\n}\n.av-special-heading.av-ld8rm0o0-8240ff45705efd873778fe19eb212980 .av-subheading{\nfont-size:15px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='av-special-heading av-ld8rm0o0-8240ff45705efd873778fe19eb212980 av-special-heading-h2 blockquote modern-quote modern-centered  avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Upgrading engines <\/h2><div class=\"special-heading-border\"><div class=\"special-heading-inner-border\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-ld8s0vsx-b3586547d398c497afad1dfe97e26709 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Even though Aurora Botnia is virtually a brand new vessel, one of its main engines has already undergone upgrades and fine tuning. This work has been done based on data, gathered by onboard sensors and sent to W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 for analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real operational data gathered during the ship\u2019s first year of operation has been a goldmine\u201d, Jonas Teir explains.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While saving a few per cent in annual fuel consumption per year might sound small, on a larger scale it has a huge impacts&#8221;, says <strong>Nico H\u00f6glund<\/strong>, Product Manager, W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 31 engine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After just a few years Wasaline could see double-digit reductions in fuel consumption compared to where they started. This translates into an equivalent reduction in emissions, or perhaps even more. Looking at the whole supply chain there are energy saving potential from well to tank.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What\u2019s more, Wasaline has agreed \u00a0that W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 can use the vessel as an R&amp;D test platform and technology demonstrator. In theory the Aurora Botnia\u2019s could operate solely on batteries, but in practice these are mostly used for peak shaving and as spinning reserve to optimise engine operation. The batteries are also used to provide power for manoeuvring in port and to power the vessel\u2019s hotel load.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are still taking baby steps with the hybrid system, so this is a learning curve for us&#8221;, Jonas Teir points out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4\u2019s monitoring and guidance has been crucial in this respect because it has allowed us to confirm or ignore our hunches and ideas about how to make optimal use of the system. Under the agreement Wasaline benefits from predictive maintenance support using cutting-edge\u00a0digital solutions\u00a0based on artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Proper engine maintenance is one of the cornerstones of good fuel efficiency&#8221;, Jonas Teir points out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Data monitoring and analysis is a huge part of helping us achieve this. This goes beyond the \u2018nuts and bolts\u2019 of a traditional maintenance agreement because the engine parameters are monitored continuously. The vessel uses W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 LNGPac\u2122 technology for LNG storage, supply control and monitoring. This dual-fuel capability helps Wasaline avoid the problem of having all its eggs in one basket in terms of fuel \u2013 both now and in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With our current setup we have multiple fuel alternatives to choose from&#8221;, says Jonas Teir.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On top of fossil LNG and diesel the vessel can also operate on biodiesel, liquefied biogas (LBG) and, when they become available, eFuels like eDiesel and synthetic LNG. This makes us more resilient to situations like the current challenges with LNG availability. It also means we have multiple pathways to decarbonise with low and zero-carbon fuels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me, the future is not full of endless challenges but limitless opportunities.
