Sustainability policy and practice

Environmental, social, local and economical sustainability is our company’s primary goal. We want our customers to see this as they are enjoying our services.

Wasaline transports passengers and goods across the Kvarken strait on a daily basis. This is the northernmost all-year round ferry crossing in the world. The route cuts across the Unesco world natural heritage site and the waters are rich in natural species. The company takes great responsibility for keeping the sea clean for future generations along the Ostrobothnian coast in Finland and the Västerbotten coast in Sweden.

The municipalities on both sides of the Kvarken strait have set significant environmental targets: the municipality of Umeå with the local Agenda 2030 programme, and the city of Vaasa’s ambition to become climate neutral by 2035. Wasaline has set its own targets for environmental contribution to complement these initiatives.

Our promise to continuously become more environmentally friendly is clear and outspoken. We review our sustainability policy every year to make sure we are achieving our goals.

Hybrid vessel

Aurora Botnia is a hybrid ferry designed to be environmentally friendly, with a machinery running on a dual fuel and battery solution (2.5 MW). The main source of fuel is liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the possibility to utilise biogas (LBG). In harbours the ferry can run only on battery power.

Comfort Lounge

Smart HVAC

The heating and ventilation as well as the lighting is intelligent in all areas. Also, the use of water is intelligent. We optimize energy consumption by producing only what is needed.

Interior materials

When planning the vessel, sustainability was considered also when choosing the materials. Examples include recyclable tabletops and carpets in the cabins made out of used fishnets.

Food from local ingredients

Local food

There are several restaurants aboard Aurora Botnia. We are always looking for local suppliers and in fact most of our ingredients come from the regions close to Umeå and Vaasa.

Sorting of waste

All waste is sorted as much as possible and brought ashore. As much as possible is recycled. Sorting is done both by personnel and passengers.

Smart harbours

In both harbours the car check-in process is fully automated. Also check-in for passengers is fully automated: gates open with the QR code of the ticket.

Shore power

Shore power

In both harbours, Vaasa and Umeå, shore power is available. This way there are no emissions in harbours at night or during port stops.
