Wasaline wins the Sustainability competition 2025 at Matka Travel Fair

The final pitch of the Sustainability Competition at the 2025 Travel Fair in Helsinki reached its climax on Thursday, January 16, 2025. Among the five finalists, Wasaline emerged as the winner and was awarded a €10,000 prize granted by the Finnish Fair Foundation.

The winner of the Sustainability Competition impressed the judges with an exceptionally convincing presentation, a strong factual foundation, a comprehensive approach, and broad scalability.

“In tourism, it is well-known that transportation accounts for a significant share of emissions. Therefore, the development and utilization of technology that reduces transportation emissions supports the entire industry’s goals of lowering emissions”, said Timo Saranpää, chair of the competition jury.

Wasaline operates the world’s northernmost year-round sea route be-tween Vaasa and Umeå, and their vessel is over 80% Finnish-made. The ship is a quiet hybrid vessel developed in collaboration with Wärtsilä in Finland. Its machinery uses a multi-fuel and battery solution, with liquefied natural gas as its primary fuel, though it can also run on biogas. The use of batteries in hybrid operation improves engine optimization, and green shore power in ports further enhances the ship’s sustainability.
