General information

You are obliged to personally ascertain the requirements for passports and visas for foreign citizens before travelling. If you have any doubts or questions regarding passports or visas, please contact the embassy of the country in question. Wasaline has full rights to deny boarding without obligation if documents are not in compliance with government regulations. EU citizens do not need to carry a travel insurance card but the European medical insurance card or the E111 health insurance card is recommended. These cards are provided by national health authorities, in Finland by Kela/Försäkingskassan.

ID control

ID CONTROL
The International Maritime Organization IMO’s full meeting decided unanimously in November 2001 to intensify port and ship security. The regulations apply from July 2004. Passengers has to prepare for security checks including proof of identity with a reliable, valid identification document such as:

Passport
Driver’s license
Obligation to proof identity applies to all passengers. Persons who cannot or refuses to proof their identity upon request are denied boarding.

Passport and visa regulations
A valid passport is required in order to enterWasaline’s destinations. Before travelling, please check which travel documents are required for these countries.

The passengers are required to find out whether they need to apply for a visa. If a visa is required, passengers have to apply for the visa themselves. If the visa or other travel documents are not valid, and the authorities turn the passenger back at the border, and the passenger is liable for subsequent expenses due to this.

Cancellation of bookings

Cancellations of route bookings, cruises and package bookings
If you are unable to depart on a journey, you should cancel or amend your reservation immediately and at the latest 48 hours before departure. This can be done by calling our customer service at +358207716810 or +4690185200 or by email at info@wasaline.com. Please note that emails are read Monday to Friday during office hours.
Changes to date, route, number of passengers, vehicles etc. are all considered amendments.

Return tickets and cruises
When cancelling a return leg, the rules as written below apply. For cruises, no refunds will be authorized after the commencement of the journey.

If the first leg of a journey has not been used or cancelled, the shipping company has a right to cancel the returning journey.
For paid reservations cancelled:

  • Earlier than 7 days prior to departure, 10% of the price or a minimum of 10 EUR / 100 SEK is charged.
  • Later than 7 days but earlier than 2 days prior to departure, 50% of the price is charged.
  • Reservations cancelled later than 2 days prior to departure are charged the full price.
  • If the reservation is cancelled later than 7 days prior to departure due to illness we charge a 10 EUR / 100 SEK cancellation fee. The reason for cancellation is to be proved with a doctor’s certificate.

Cancellation of unpaid package bookings:
Unpaid package bookings must be cancelled at the latest 48 hours before departure, otherwise the full package price will be charged.

Reimbursement of cancelled bookings

Please contact us via telephone or email with your booking number and your IBAN account number and Swift code of your bank.

Cancellation terms for groups

Cancellation terms for groups 
The whole reservation may be cancelled up to 8 workdays before departure without any cost.
If the whole reservation is cancelled within 7-3 workdays before departure, we charge you 10% of the whole reservation.
We charge 100% of the whole reservation, if the reservation is cancelled 2 workdays before departure or later.
We charge 50% of the ticket price for passengers cancelled from a group reservation 7-3 workdays before departure.
We charge 100% of the ticket price for all passengers cancelled from a group reservation 2 workdays before the departure or later.

Name changes are free of charge.

The name list including; Group name, booking reference, Surname, First name, DOB (ddmmyy) is sent to group@wasaline.com no later than 3 days before departure.

Routines for refunding payments

Contact our booking staff and state your booking number, the clearing number of your bank and your account number if the refund is to be done to a Swedish account, or your Swift number if the refund is to be done in Finland.

Vehicles

When booking a vehicle, the following information must be presented: type of vehicle and its measurements (length, height). Vehicle prices on the Wasaline home page or in advertisements and brochures are only valid for passenger vehicles. If a booked vehicle is found to exceed the given measurements, or the vehicle is registered as a freight vehicle, the customer will be charged for a vehicle with the correct measurements or according to the freight rates. Wasaline will always strive to book a new place for the vehicle, but availability cannot be guaranteed. Vehicles that transport goods in commercial purposes and vehicles that are registered for goods transportation must always be booked as freight vehicles.

Age limits

There are no age restrictions in passenger traffic, except for some divergent departures, see below.

Young persons and children under 18 years can travel alone when they have a written permit from their parent or guardian. The written permit can be checked with the parents or the guardian by phone.

Travel permit form

A young person presents the written permit together with the boarding card when boarding. The young person must, upon request, certify her/his identity and inform the guardian’s contact details. Accepted identity cards are a driving license, an official identity card or a passport.

Exceptions

Hotel trips to Sweden and Finland; the age limit is 18 years every day.

The age limit for following departures are 18 in both harbours: Christmas cruises and New Year cruises.

On Saturday departures from Uumaja at 8:00 p.m. the age limit is 15 years. Youngsters between15-17 years can travel alone with a written permit from their parents or guardian.

Age Requirements for Cruising

The age limit for Day Cruising (departure and return on the same day) is 18 years. Youngsters between 15-17 years can participate in a Day Cruise with a written permit from their parents or guardian. The written permit can be checked with the parents or the guardian by phone. Form for youngsters travelling alone.

A young person presents the written permit together with the boarding card when boarding. The young person must, upon request, certify her/his identity and inform the guardian’s contact details. Accepted identity cards are a driving license, an official identity card or a passport.

The age limit for an overnight cruise is 18 years without exceptions (Party cruise).

Age Requirements in the Bar

The bar is appropriate for adults only in the evenings. During daytime and early evening, all children and young people are welcome!

The guardians are responsible for their children and underage persons during the trip.

Guides/Leaders

Who can act as a guide/leader for individual persons, who does not fulfil the age requirements?

  • Persons over 20 years.

 

Children´s friends joining the trip

When own parents (mother/father), legal guardian (also stepmother/dad) or grandparents are present on the trip, up to three of the children’s friends can join the family on the trip.

Payments can be made in the following ways:

If an advance payment cannot be made according to above described it shall be paid at check-in in the port. For payment in the port there is a 10€/95 kr fee.

Payment conditions Ticket control

At the check-in counter at the terminal the ticket is exchanged to a boarding card. Passengers are required to show the boarding card upon embarking. Be prepared to prove your identity. Check-in closes 15 minutes prior to departure.

Companions are usually not allowed to enter the ship. In case a companion is needed, please contact our sales or check-in.

Passengers with vehicles:
Passengers with vehicles must be at the check in one hour prior to departure at the latest. Reservations for late arrivals are not guaranteed (vehicle is put on waiting list). Passengers do not have access to the car deck during the voyage.

Passengers without vehicles:
Please arrive at the terminal no later than 30 minutes before departure. The reservations of passengers arriving later than this are no longer valid.The gangway closes 15 minutes prior to departure.

Boarding begins 40 minutes prior to departure.

When making a reservation, the first and last name, date of birth and nationality of all passengers must be given. Please also inform us about a possible disability.

If the tickets are used at another time than originally planned, the reservation must be changed. The change should be marked on the ticket. Any change in price, due to different price seasons, is to be paid. There are no other charges for changes.

In case the original ticket has been lost, a new ticket must be purchased. The shipping company will not refund lost, stolen or destroyed tickets. Travel insurance is recommended.

Any unused ticket is reimbursed only when the booking is cancelled in due order and the cancellation is marked on the ticket. A fee is charged for this according to the cancellation rules.

Health

Persons with reduced health and who therefore are limited to take care of themselves during the voyage should consult their doctor regarding travel plans prior to booking of the trip.

For safety reasons we do not recommend travelling in the last phase of pregnancy.

We recommend passengers with wheelchair to use the gangway when boarding the ship. This because we cannot guarantee a close access to the passenger lift at the car deck. Our personnel gives you more information when booking.

We at Wasaline are committed to providing a smooth, accessible and enjoyable travel for passengers with disabilities.

Our special assistance service is offered by the terminals and/or the shipping company and is intended for passengers with limited vision or hearing and clients who are temporarily or permanently physically impaired – for everyone in need of special assistance. The service is completely free of charge.

In order to guarantee a comfortable journey, please consider the following:
* Indicate your need of assistance when booking a ticket.
* Make sure to retrieve all necessary information to realise your travel plans.
* Be realistic about your need of assistance, particularly if you have trouble walking longer distances unassisted – the distances between check-in and ship are long.
* The assistance provided by terminal/shipping company is general assistance. If you are in need of more personal assistance, for example with meals, lifting, medication or toileting, you should consider bringing a personal assistant aboard.

Special assistance 
Special assistance should be ordered when making a reservation or 48 hours prior to departure at the latest. Please inform us about the use of a wheelchair or other personal equipment.

Passengers with pre-booked assistance should report to the personnel when arriving at the check-in area. The assistant will then come and help you with checking in and escort you aboard. Disembarking passengers are escorted from the ship to the meeting point of the terminal.

Citizens of Nordic countries:
Citizens of the Nordic countries travelling within the Nordic region are not required to have a passport, but will need to be able to present a valid, reliable proof of identity when requested. Such documents are for example a passport or photo identification card issued after March 1st of 1999, excluding temporary identity cards, identity cards issued for minors without consent of the guardian and identity cards issued for foreigners. Person who cannot or is unwilling to prove or reveal his/her identity upon request is denied boarding.

Please note: according to Schengen rules everyone is required to prove his/her identity for instance in hotels, camping areas and so forth.

Citizens of the EU and Switzerland:
Passport or photo ID according to the EU standards. Identity cards must state its expiry date and the cardholder’s nationality. Passports are highly recommended.

Citizens of other countries:
Passport and visa, if applicable.

Rules of conduct for passangers

To ensure everybody’s welfare and safety on board, all passengers must follow these rules of conduct:

– Passengers are liable for showing a valid boarding pass while boarding the ship and upon request during the voyage.

– Before or while boarding the ship, passengers may be subjected to security checks if necessary. Also the luggage or vehicle of passengers can be inspected. Passengers have to follow the existing passport, visa or residence permit regulations at the port of departure and of destination, and upon request produce certificates issued by authorities. If the shipping company is liable or otherwise affected due to the missing travel or other documents of the passenger, the passenger is liable for the expenses that might incur to the shipping company.

– Passengers can be denied boarding, if their travel documents are inadequate, or they are intoxicated or if they behave threateningly or are indecently dressed, or if they, according to other passengers, give offence, or for any other valid reason.

– The consumption of alcoholic beverages brought on board is forbidden. The possession and use of narcotics on board is forbidden.

– Passengers are not allowed to bring hazardous objects or materials on board. Lighting of fire on board (candles, gas stoves, etc.) is forbidden.

– Passengers must declare any guns and other weapons at check-in before boarding the ship. The weapons must be delivered to the information counter on board for temporary deposit for the length of the voyage. The weapons will be handed over against a receipt and identity card before landing.

– Pets must stay in the areas designated for them, or they must be reserved a pet cabin for the length of the voyage. The pets must not be brought into restaurant premises.

– Passengers shall always follow the instructions given by the crew of the ship, and the ship’s rules of conduct. The acting crew of the ship represents the ship’s captain regarding the keeping of order, safety and security on board the ship. The crew of the ship is obliged to take action if the situation demands it.

– During the voyage, the behavior of passengers must not be disturbing or threatening to fellow passengers in any way. Passengers who cannot exercise self-control, or who behave disturbingly and improperly, or who break security rules can be taken into custody for the rest of the voyage.

– While on board, passengers are forbidden to consume alcoholic beverages, purchased from the ship’s shop, before landing.

– Passengers are forbidden to consume their own food in the ship’s restaurants, with the exception of baby food, or special dietary food or beverages.

– During the voyage, passengers can stay only in the areas designated for passengers.

– Staying on the car deck, repairing vehicles, and handling fuel during the voyage are forbidden.

– Any theft, burglary, or other illegal activity, such as shoplifting, taken place on board the ship will always be reported to the police. Any movable property in a cabin, such as bedclothes, pillows or chairs, must not be removed from the cabin.

– Passengers whose cause damage on board the ship are liable for compensation. Passengers who damage the ship’s safety equipment will be prosecuted. Passengers who cause false alarms or who deliberately damage alarm systems will always be reported to the police.

– While on board, passengers are not allowed to conduct business or other sales activities, to organize funds, to run lotteries or propaganda events, to agitate or give political speeches, unless agreed with the shipping company in advance.

– A passenger refers to a person who stays on board the ship and who does not belong to the crew of the ship.

Smoking onboard

All public areas onboard are smoke free. With consideration of fire safety and general comfort smoking is only allowed in outside areas marked with “Smoking Area” sign.

Safety onboard

We encourage passengers to get to know the ships safety instructions. At departure short information is given regarding the ships safety instructions and lifesaving equipment. The crew is always ready to answer questions regarding safety.

The safety management system of Wasaline is constructed according to the international safety code, ISM-Code, and it’s approved and certified by Trafi.

Car passengers please notice:
All goods in the car must be securely fixed.
Smoking and making of an open fire on car deck is forbidden.
Staying on car deck during voyage is forbidden.
The car deck is closed the during the voyage and opens at arrival.
Follow crew instructions on car deck and do not start your engine until it’s your turn to drive out.
Flammable liquids in open containers cannot be transported on car deck.
Valves on gas containers in campers and caravans must be closed during voyage.

Pets

Dogs and cats can be transported onboard in spaces reserved for that purpose. Inform about pets at time of booking because the number of pets onboard is limited.Please bring own bowls for water and food.

Sending information

By accepting the conditions of travel, you agree to receive information via e-mail, such as notices concerning trips, cruises, news, competitions, offers etc. Wasaline holds this right to itself and you will not be contacted by any other company. The newsletter may be cancelled any time by following the instructions on an e-mail. Your e-mail address is saved in a database together with your other contact information which will be handled according to the laws concerning personal information.

Time differences and time onboard

Arrival and departure times are always indicated in local time. Finland is one hour ahead (+1 h) of Sweden.

Time onboard is Finnish time.

Transportation terms

Standard conditions of carriage for passengers and their luggage

The Carrier is NLC Ferry Oy Ab and the contract of carriage evidenced by the ticket containing these standard conditions of carriage is between Vasabåtarna and the passenger.

Applicable Law

Applicable Law
The contract of carriage is governed by the provisions of either the Finnish Maritime Code or the Swedish Maritime Code, depending upon whichever is mandatory applicable at the place of the competent court under these standard conditions of carriage. If none of these provisions of law is mandatory applicable at the place of the competent court under these standard conditions of carriage, then provisions of law mandatory applicable at such place upon carriage of passengers, their luggage and accompanied vehicles shall apply.

If no provisions of law are mandatory applicable to carriage of passengers, their luggage and accompanied vehicles at the place of the competent court under these standard conditions or at the place of any other court granting jurisdiction, then the provisions of the Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea 1974 as amended by protocol 29.3.1990 included with European Parliament act (EY) 329/2009 shall govern the contract of carriage.

Jurisdiction

Jurisdiction
Disputes under the contract of carriage shall be determined by the competent court at the option of the Plaintiff at:
a) the place of permanent residence or principal place of business of the defendant or
b) the place of departure or the place of destination according to the contract of carriage.

If according to clause 2 above the provisions of the Swedish Maritime Code are to be applied to the contract of carriage, the dispute can also be determined at the option of the Plaintiff by the competent court defined in the provisions of chapter 21, section 4, subsections 3 and 4 in the Swedish Maritime Code.

If according to clause 2 above the provisions of the Athens Convention are to be applied to the contract of carriage, the dispute can also be determined at the option of the Plaintiff by the competent court defined in Article 17, subsection I (c) and (b).

Scope of Application

Scope of Application
The contract of carriage and the provisions of law applicable according to clause 2 above shall govern the carriage by sea of the passenger, his luggage and any accompanied vehicle. The carriage by sea covers the period, which the passenger, his luggage and the accompanied vehicle are in the Carrier’s terminal at the place of departure, on board the vessel and in the Carrier’s terminal at the place of destination.

The contract of carriage and the provisions of law applicable according to clause 2 above shall not be applied to other services and/or contracts entered into between the passenger and Wasaline Oy Ab outside the scope of carriage by sea as defined above.

Tickets and Vessel

The ticket evidencing the contract of carriage must be presented when checking in at the Carrier’s terminal at the place of departure. The passenger is not entitled to transfer the rights granted on the ticket to any other person. Anyone who has obtained a ticket on behalf of another person shall be considered empowered to do so and to accept these standard conditions of carriage on behalf of this person.

The Carrier is not liable to pay any refund on stolen, lost or destroyed tickets.

Both the passenger’s and the Carrier’s right to cancel the contract of carriage is defined in the provisions of the law applicable according to clause 2 above.

The Carrier is entitled to perform the carriage by another vessel than that announced or stated on the ticket.

Restrictions Concerning Luggage

The passenger is not allowed to bring to the terminal or on board any luggage or cabin luggage that may cause danger or considerable inconvenience for the terminal, the vessel, passengers or other luggage / cabin luggage or cargo. The Carrier shall have the right to carry ashore or to render innocuous or to destroy such luggage / cabin luggage at the cost of the passenger and without any responsibility on the part of the Carrier.

The passenger is not allowed to bring to the terminal or on board any live animals without express and separate agreement with the Carrier.

The Carrier is entitled for safety reasons to check the passenger’s luggage, cabin luggage and vehicles both in terminals and on board.

Carrier’s Liability

Carrier’s Liability
The Carrier’s liability is determined in accordance with the applicable law under clause 2 above and is always limited as defined and to the amount available in the provisions of the applicable law or the Athens Convention as amended by protocol 29.3.1990.

The Carrier’s liability is also limited under the provisions of law or international conventions concerning the limitation of liability on Maritime Claims as applicable at the place of the competent court under clause 2 above.

The Carrier is not liable for damages, losses or expenses in respect of delay howsoever caused and arising before commencement of or after the end of the carriage by sea.

Liability of Carrier’s Employees, Agents and Independent Contractors

If any action is brought directly against the owner of the vessel, her master or her crew or any employee, agent or independent contractor or against anyone having an interest in the vessel, such person shall be entitled to avail himself of defences and limits of liability, which the Carrier is entitled to invoke under the contract of carriage and the provisions of law applicable in accordance with clause 2 above, as if they were expressly made for his benefit. In entering into any contract of carriage the Carrier does so not only on its own behalf but also as, the agent and trustee for such persons who shall to this extent be or be deemed to be parties to the contract of carriage.

The aggregate amounts recoverable from the Carrier and such other persons shall in no case exceed the limits provided under the contract of carriage and the provisions of law applicable in accordance with clause 2 above.
