The EU ETS is a cornerstone of the EU’s policy to combat climate change and is a key tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective way. As part of the European Commissions Fit for 55 package the shipping industry will be included in EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) from 2024.
Currently the price of the European Union Allowance (EUA) is around EUR 100 and each allowance counts for one ton of CO2.

The EU Commission have reached an agreement on a three-year phase-in period of the EU ETS for shipping. The agreed three-year phase-in period is as follow:
All the ferry routes in Europe will be regulated under the EU ETS starting from 1 January 2024.
How ETS affects pricing at Wasaline
In line with our climate plan, Wasaline continues to invest in sustainability initiatives such as shore power, more efficient terminal operations and technical vessel modifications for reducing the emissions and thereby the impact of the EU ETS tax.
The ETS, port and fuel surcharges will apply to all our ticket types, and they will also apply to groups and freight.
These add-ons will be added to the prices from the beginning of 2024. All reservations done during 2023 for 2024 will not have this add on.
