The most environmentally friendly maritime transport between Finland and Sweden and further to Europe
Wasaline transports goods every day all year round with its new ferry, Aurora Botnia. The crossing between Vaasa, Finland and Umeå, Sweden takes just 3.5 hours.
Multimodal train connections from the Port of Umeå are the key to very low CO2 emissions. For example, the route from Barcelona to Vaasa by train and Wasaline reduces the CO2 emissions more than 80 percent compared to the existing route with trucks and sea transportation from Germany to Finland.
“We are very pleased to announce our joint intermodal product to book train transports from Northern Spain all the way to Finland via Umeå”, says Tony Ehrs, Cargo Director of Wasaline.
“As ETS regulations are coming into force in 2024, we believe that the end customers will start to calculate their total transport emissions in a whole new way. A train transportation from Spain up to Vaasa via Swedish rail network produces 5 times less carbon dioxide compared to the truck and ferry solution of today. Lead times are also very competitive”, Ehrs continues.
During Aurora Botnia’s first year in service Wasaline was able to cut total CO2 emissions by 51.8 percent. As the new ferry has more weekly departures than its predecessor, the reduction in average emissions per departure becomes even greater: 67.2 percent. The calculations are based on data from 2022 and 2013, the first operating year of the previous ferry.
“Our efforts to cut down emissions are never over. We strive to keep Aurora Botnia as the world’s most environmentally friendly ferry now and in the future. We also see the proposed emissions trading in maritime transport as a positive development, as long as the rules treat all shipping companies equally”, says Peter Ståhlberg, Managing Director of Wasaline.
